Reflexology and Back Pain

The traditional approach to back pain is to prescribe medication in the form of pain killers and anti-inflammatory medicines. Physiotherapy is also sometimes recommended and in some cases so is bed rest. However, Reflexology can give huge relief for spine conditions. Reflexology can help with the following:

  • Lumbago
  • Arthritis of the cervical spine
  • Chronic neck inflammations
  • Sciatica
  • Whiplash injuries

Reflexology can help to reduce discomfort, settle inflammations, and normalise joint functions. It can also help to treat frozen shoulder and free tension and pain in the cases of arthritis

There are obviously limitations to what reflexology can do for degenerative bone and joint conditions but treatment can offer some reduction in the pain and stiffness and reduce inflammation, providing a better quality of life.

What causes back pain?

Back pain is the most common reason for people taking time off work as the majority of skeletal problems that we experience come from our spine. The reason for back conditions being on the increase is due to the way that humans have evolved so quickly over such a short period of time. Due to our improvements in nutrition and health care for infants we are now growing taller than we were a couple of generations ago. In general terms the taller you are the more likely you are to suffer from back pain as the spine has more to support. However, back pain can also be caused by poor posture, lack of exercise, premenstrual cramps, an accident or heavy lifting.

Back pain can often show up in pain or stresses experienced in other parts of the body. Lower back problems in particular can create pain in the knees, calves, and feet. There are also conditions, such as pregnancy, where an individual will change their posture to putting strain on the spine and back muscles. Similarly neck pain can create problems in the shoulders and arms and often create pain and tingling that radiates down to the tips of the fingers.
