Reflexology and Stress
Reflexology can help by aiding the muscles in the body to relax, releasing physical tension in the body and helping the nervous system to function normally. These changes can have a beneficial effect on the rest of the bodies systems and the way they function, helping to alleviate the affects of stress.
Continuous stress can cause energy blockages in the body and Reflexology can help to release these. It can also encourage the bodies self healing mechanisms and sense of well-being. By reducing stress levels, improvements can be seen in disorders that are often linked to stress, such as insomnia, headaches and lethargy.
After-care advice from the therapist can also help to find ways to change your lifestyle and habits, to break the cycle of stress and therefore its health implications.
What is stress?
Stress is defined as ‘a response by the body to something that is perceived as threatening’. We can experience many forms of stress, from the physical stress we put on our joints or muscles when we run, to the stress our whole body experiences when we are exposed to the cold. There is also the emotional and mental stress we come across when a relationship breaks down, we are over-worked, experience financial difficulties, have exams, move house or are coping with a bereavement.
Good stress Vs bad stress.
There is such a thing as ‘good stress’, this form of stress is what makes our body react to challenges and situations with strength, stamina and a heightened sense of alert. A healthy amount of this form of stress can be a very powerful motivational force and some people thrive off it. Good stress provokes what we recognise as an adrenaline rush, and without it many of our human achievements would not have been made.
Whilst stress has its benefits for some circumstances, it can also have a harmful effect on the body and can trigger many diseases and disorders such as insomnia, high blood pressure, asthma, gastric ulcers, irritable bowl syndrome, and migraines to name but a few. We will all experience stress from time to time but having more stress than we can handle is one of the greatest threats to our health and stress is the most common cause of ill health in modern society.
It is vital that we recognise when this bad stress is causing adverse reactions and regular reflexology treatments can be used to combat its unhealthy effects. Should you wish to book a reflexology treatment or make an enquiry please feel free to contact me.
